Awesome thoughts, Jonathan. Thanks so much for taking the time to reflect on these things. Our conversations together have certainly helped me clarify my own. I appreciate you.

This comment on how Jesus did it makes the idea of discipleship exciting – > “It was a living process rather than a stale, classroom relationship.” We’ve all been in a classroom, and when the idea of discipleship brings with it the air of “classroom”, it’s avoided like the plague. Although I’m sure if people knew what they were getting into when they decide to do life with another person they might avoid it as well ;-). Discipline and conflict aren’t enjoyable, but inevitable in a dynamic discipleship process.
Loved this – > “Discipleship is a simple process, but I don’t want to make it simplistic.  We have to care enough to get involved.  We have to love enough to include.  We have to trust enough to be real.  None of that is easy…” I’ve strangely been encouraged by the realization that relationship with the LORD and making disciples is not complicated…it’s just impossible. It gets my eyes off elaborate man-made strategies and focuses my efforts on what really matters -> attempting things that if God doesn’t come through and do His thing, I fall flat on my face (WARNING: This comes with much anxiety and you’ll have to learn to “Cast like a champion” – My “clever” saying that ties 1 Peter 5:7 with my love for Notre Dame football…).
So thankful for our conversations about discipleship and for your collected thoughts here. The video from D.A. Carson was great too. Really appreciate you sharpening my thoughts.
I also have noticed a huge difference in how Jesus invests His disciples in the Great Commission and how I have. He threw them in the water so they could learn to swim (Sheep among wolves is how He put it…read that today actually) and I hesitate and wait for “just the right time” to send any young believers into the harvest field. But there is something incredibly developing about jumping into a mission that you aren’t ready for (not that you’re ever really “ready”). It seems to be one of the ways to navigate the tension of evangelism vs discipleship…do we develop the current disciples or do we reach the new? No, instead we can develop the current to reach the new = multiplication. (Sorry, I had to preach to myself real quick)
