The ability to express the inner world of the mind so that others hear, understand, and are then moved to reciprocate is an amazing gift. While some struggle to carry on a conversation out of timidity, the vast majority of us struggle with an over-abundance of words that often fail to communicate what is most important at best and, at worst, mishandle our words to the harm of others. As the writer of Proverbs taught, “When there are many words, sin is unavoidable.”
I heard a podcast recently that challenged me to develop an ability to say more with less; to choose words so carefully that only the most important are chosen. As a pastor, I’m sure my church family applauds the effort.
I accept the challenge.
To that end, I’m incorporating into my website a focus on posts that are 300 words or less. Not all, but some. It’s an arbitrary number but it’s the one my mind kept returning to. I think the exercise will benefit not only myself but also those who choose to read the results.
My focus won’t change much: I will continue to write occasionally on worldview problems, ethical dilemmas, biblical truths, and personal struggles, though admittedly, space necessitates overviews rather than in-depth treatises. Personally, I think there is enough bloviating in the world. Let’s take a stab at brevity.
This is something of an experiment to further my own journey while hopefully encouraging others. I welcome your input.
I am interested in working through issues out loud as well as dealing with topics I may know little about but are worth exploring. So if you have a subject you’d like to contribute, I’ll try to find the best 300 words to address it. So…let’s get this thing started!
This is 300 words.
