Update 3/26/21: apparently, Ms. Jhaveri has been fired from USA Today. In other words, the who called for ORU to be canceled…was canceled.
————-
I have never been a supporter of Oral Roberts Ministries. However, the policies being roundly condemned by the writer of this USA Today article only apply to students who choose to enroll. They come knowing exactly what is expected of them.
Regardless, Ms. Jhavari argues that ORU has no right (morally?) to play in an NCAA basketball tournament and should never have been included by the NCAA due to their “toxic notions of fundamentalism that fetishize chastity, abstinence, and absurd hemlines” as well as their “moral regressiveness.” Regress? Morally, Christians continue to stand on what has been the standard for humanity for Millenia. This is just the next attack in an effort to cancel whoever doesn’t agree with a brand new redefinition of “modern society and the basic values of human decency.” (her words)
While it is important to communicate Truth with grace, it is also important to communicate hypocrisy with boldness. This article is a perfect example of the blatant intolerance of anyone who stands on any principle other than far-left “progressive” ideology.
I am not nor ever have been in favor of pushing anything on anyone. I believe that people have a right to make their own choices, good or bad, but I won’t be forced to embrace or personally approve of them any more than I expect everyone to embrace or approve of mine.
That is called tolerance. What we are witnessing and this article perfectly articulates is nothing short of cultural totalitarianism. The message is clear: “Cave or cancel. Your choice.”
That doesn’t scare me half as much as this one: “Don’t you know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? So whoever wants to be the friend of the world becomes the enemy of God.” James 4:4
That makes for a pretty easy choice.
